Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by neurology
I say a lot of dumb stuff. Or at least my brain thinks I say a lot of dumb stuff, and will constantly analyze everything I said in the last week to figure out why it was dumb. I could solve string theory in a conversation and my brain would berate me for being arrogant and overbearing.
Even if it mostly isn’t true, on occasion I do say stupid things. I‘m very much a weirdo who understands human interaction at a conceptual but not an intuitive level (aka Audhd). I will inevitably do or say something awkward because I do most things very intensely, I overshare, and all the other quirky things I do. The vast majority of the time, I have absolutely no intention of causing harm or offense, but harms happen, offenses are taken. Unfortunately I usually have not been given a lot of grace, especially before I knew my diagnosis and could coherently explain myself.
After getting diagnosed Audhd and really coming to understand the vast expanse of differences in how brains process information, I’ve had to learn to allow the same understanding and tolerance for other people’s blundering as I wish I had been give. There are so many conflicts of thought and opinion that are very easily explained by differences in processing at the neurological level, but are instead used as evidence of moral inferiority or supremacy.
I don’t seek to excuse any particular behavior, just to allow for the true complexity of the human mind; to remember that we truly think differently at a fundamental level. Malevolence is almost never the motivation for another’s actions or words, though it is much easier to think so than to confront the reality of difference.
